Someone on EJ did some spec modeling, and his results indicated that Frost may be the best spec for DPS at almost every level of gear, with fire only catching up near the highest levels, and arcane trailing pretty far behind. An interesting read. elitistjerks.com/f31/t26830-mage_rawr_spec_shootout/

Not surprised that arcane did poorly. It scales funny, and just doesn't have the mana efficiency to be viable for raiding.
I always knew that frost could be competitive with fire, but I was a little surprised to see how well it did against fire. However, in actual game play, frost DPS is trickier to pull off. You have more cooldowns to manage, and you need to make sure your procs and trinkets all go off during your icy veins, and you have to make sure your water elemental doesn't die. Fire is a much more mindless spec, which translates into more ideal situations that theorycraft assumes more of the time.

Frost destroyes in dps till you hit a mage in full T6 gear and fire spec then the fire build becomes stronger however Frost spec is still better even at T6 yes you might do just alittle less damage than fire however you stay alive longer.. and dbl iceblock pwns however SSC 2 fights do not favor frost mages... Hydros and Vash elementals.

I read this - and was more interested in the back and forth epeen discussion in the thread about right and wrong. I know how to gear up... and I leave the theorycrafters to do their decimal based calculations as i benefit by reading it. Nobody will mistaken me for a strong theorycrafter.
I use websites like wowwiki, thottbot, wow-loot, tankadin, etc etc. They give me all I need. mark is totally right - fire is just easiest of them all.
My Mage theorycrafting?
blah blah blah FIRE

How is fire easiest? Fire stack scortch make shure you keep it up at all times.. launch fire balls..
Frost - Cast Frostbolt over and over and over and over and if you have to move you can use an instant cast to keep the debuff up (icelance) oh pop the pet here and there...
Plus frost = 2 iceblocks. 2 icyveins, and the one shield *yeah dun have to use mana shield lol*
Fire - ohh i get see see big numbers once in a blue moon =)
All n All i believe frost is the best for raiding u have a better chance of surviving fights, for kiting fights frost pwns fire =).
However if your a Tier 6 geared mage the set bonuses makes fire better but we are not there so pew pew go go go frost =)
